5 W's Abstraction

Design Goal
Investigate how letterforms interact with one another
as shapes to create a form. This personal project offers an opportunity
to explore text as a shape with abstraction processes using the 5 W's (who, what, where, why, and when)

Beyond Language
This project investigates the interaction between letterforms and their spatial relationships, exploring how typography can transcend its traditional role of conveying language.

Refining Interactions
Using a process of abstraction and trial and error, I focus on the interplay between letters to form a cohesive design. The key challenge was achieving the precise interaction of letters to create the striking visual of the "w."

Abstracting through Space
Modularly fitting the letters, I abstract them by carefully manipulating positive and negative space. The interplay between the solid forms
of the letters and the empty spaces around them create a dynamic tension, allowing the typographic elements to evolve into an expressive, unified mark.

Warmth and Harmony
The colors are warm and earthy, evoking comfort. This rich palette contrasts with the rigid geometric forms, softening their sharpness
and adding visual harmony. The colors balance the design, offering
a welcoming and grounded aesthetic to the work.

Blurring Boundaries
This exploration was a fun opportunity to engage with letterforms expressively. Through this design process, the boundaries between legibility and abstraction blurred, highlighting the aesthetic potential of letterforms as both graphic and conceptual elements.
