Design Iterations and Process

This poster design captures the dynamic energy of the Bachelor of Master of Fine Arts (MFA) art students’ exhibition. The show featured artists building upon each other’s works week after week, so the artwork evolved with each new iteration.

The first poster represents the transfer of ‘control’ from one artist to another by shifting the word ‘control’—moving the ‘con’ over to the ‘trol.’ This visual symbolizes an artist relinquishing ownership of their work. With three cohorts in the program, I included three lines in the left corner to represent the three graduating classes.

The second poster reflects the deconstruction of the original artwork, with fragmented letters signifying the breakdown of control from the initial creation to its first transformation by the next artist.

In the third poster, the letters "MFA" are repeated three times, with the yellow MFA crossed out to symbolize the coming together of all three cohorts for the final exhibition. Once again, I used a line connecting each graduate’s name to the next, reinforcing the theme of passing control from one artist to the next.

Ultimately, the first poster was selected by the department and used for marketing and promotions.

Marketing & Social Media

The poster design was featured across multiple marketing platforms, including the Art and Architecture and Graduate Art Students' Instagram accounts. It was also used for campus and downtown Moscow advertising, as well as event signage.

Final Thoughts

Creating the visual identity for the MFA art exhibition was an exciting experience. I collaborated with graduate students and the art department to craft a design incorporating the University of Idaho’s branding while infusing it with artistic creativity.
